How to plant grass seed by hand in summer

The optimal time for laying the lawn – тревни смески Semenata
To ensure a fast and uniform germination of your grass seeds, it is important that the germination conditions are optimal at the time you sow them.

Germination conditions are optimal when the soil is warm and the humidity is high. The conditions are present in spring and autumn, and therefore it is best to sow the grass seeds in April / May or August / September. As a rule of thumb, you can say that as soon as the anemones bloom, the soil is warm enough for you to sow the grass seeds.

If you want to plant your lawn in early spring, you can use Turfline Turbo Lawn. This grass seed mixture contains the grass variety ‘Axcella’, which germinates and grows at lower temperatures than ordinary grass varieties.

If the soil is too cold or the seeds are sown for a period without rain, their growing conditions will be greatly impaired. However, this does not mean that the seed is dead. On the contrary, it lies dormant in the soil and will begin to germinate as soon as conditions are favorable (when there is heat and moisture in the soil).

Three-step guide to preparing the ground
The first step on the road before laying a new lawn is loosening the soil. If the soil is compacted where the lawn is to be laid, it should be loosened in depth by a so-called digging. You may want to hire a grubber or have a landscape gardener do the work. Before laying the lawn, the soil must be milled or dug to a depth of 25 cm. Mill first in one direction and then across.
The next step is to remove stones and roots. You should be especially careful about weeding perennial root weeds, as this is difficult to remove once the grass plants are established. Be sure to include the entire root as well as any root fragments when weeding.
Finally, you should plan the ground when you need to lay a new lawn. You do this by tearing the soil thoroughly so that lumps and tubers break. Then walk the whole area through small steps so that the ground is free of air pockets. First on one joint and then the other. Finally, you should pull a long plank or ladder over the area so that you get a completely flat surface. Rake with a fine-toothed rake, so that the last stones and plant remains are removed, and the upper cm of soil become fine and loose.

Fertilizer of the soil
Before establishing the lawn, the soil should be fertilized so that the grass seeds have a little to live on immediately. It is important that the fertilizer is evenly distributed over the entire area.

You can use Turfline® fertilizer, and you should always follow the packaging instructions when dosing fertilizer. If you choose Turfline® iSeed Repair, you get grass seeds coated with fertilizers that ensure an improved germination percentage and establishment time. With these grass seeds, you also do not need to add extra fertilizer.

Sowing the lawn
You should sow the grass seeds on a windless day, as it is difficult to keep track of the small seeds in windy weather and the risk of drying out increases when it is windy.

If the soil is very dry, water it thoroughly before sowing. Since the seeds in the carton are different sizes, you should mix them thoroughly before sowing them if you want an even distribution of large and small seeds.

For even sowing of grass, you should also divide the seeds into two portions, of which the first portion should be sown on one joint and the second portion on the opposite joint. For a larger area, it may pay to divide the area into fields with associated seed portions.

You will need approx. 1 kg grass seed per 50 m2, and you can sow the seeds by hand or rent a seed drill. After sowing grass, tear the area lightly so that the seeds are covered with 0.5 cm of soil. You should not water the area after sowing the grass seeds, as in that case the seeds will swim together and the even distribution will be spoiled.

Mowing the lawn
You should never mow the grass below 3 cm. This is because the grass has to spend too much energy on new leaf shoots when it gets too short. It weakens the root system, just stains the lawn and invites the weeds to settle down. It is a good idea to change the cutting direction with each cut.
Sowing grass – If you need to sow a lawn or build a parking lot with grass, you can get good advice here on which grass seeds to choose and how to prepare the soil.

It takes some preparation to sow a lawn. However, you will also enjoy the lawn for many years to come. Therefore, it makes sense for you to make sure you spend time and energy getting the lawn laid properly once and for all.

For example, there is a great deal of preparation in preparing the ground for the grass. This is especially true if you live in a newly built house where large machines have recently driven around the earth. In that case, it will be completely compressed.

There is also some preparation in that you get researched what will be the right kind of grass seed for your garden. It depends, for example, on how much sun and shade there is in the garden, and how much water the seeds will get.

When should I sow grass?
You can sow grass as soon as the temperature is above 10 degrees. However, the best time is in August and September, when the ground has warmed up after the summer and where it often rains.

However, you can also sow the grass in the spring, but the seeds will take longer to germinate because the soil is still cold. In addition, it typically does not rain as much in the spring, which means you have to be willing to water.

What type of grass should I choose?
There is a large selection of different types of seed mixtures. You should therefore choose the one that suits your garden. Some are suitable for sun, while others thrive in shade. Some can stand on moist soil, others thrive on dry soil.

Most grass mixtures consist of several different types of seeds. It helps to provide a more robust lawn. You can get grass seed mixtures with microclover, which helps to make the lawn appear green all year round. In addition, the clover helps to add fertilizer to the lawn.

You can find grass seed mixtures in all price ranges. However, it may typically pay off for you to buy a slightly more expensive one. The cheap ones contain seeds with a poorer germination capacity. This means that you must inspect the grass where nothing has sprouted. At the same time, they just stain that you are going to have to weed more weeds.

When buying grass seeds, expect to use 3 kilos of seeds per 100 square meters.

How to prepare the ground
There is a lot of work involved in preparing the soil before you can sow your grass seeds. This applies both if you need to build a brand new lawn and if you want to update an old one. However, it is worth spending time at work, as the lawn must last for many years.

You should always start by removing perennial weeds from your lawn. It is something that you can have a lot of trouble removing afterwards, and before the lawn is laid out, it is easier.

Then mill the soil so that it becomes loose and airy. If the soil has previously grown grass or plants, you only need to loosen down to 20 cm. If it is on a building site, loosen all the way down to 70-80 cm. This is because soil on building plots will suffer from tractosis because the large construction machines have pressed the soil hard together. This means that there is too little water and air in the soil for the grass to grow.

Then you should look at whether the soil needs improvement. A clay soil needs sand added, while a sandy soil will need clay. You should also provide compost or fertilizer so that it can nourish the grass and, among other things, the earthworms that are important for your garden to thrive.

Once you have worked the ground, you should plan it. This makes it nicer to look at and easier for you to mow with the lawn mower. Finally, you should tear the soil so that you remove stones, root debris and smaller branches.

How do I sow grass most easily?
You should sow grass one day when it is not blowing so that the light seeds do not blow away. In addition, the wind also helps to dry out the soil. If you have a large garden, it is a good idea to divide it with strings so that you can more easily see the areas. Then first on one joint and then on the other. It is quite a hike, but helps to make it get done thoroughly.

There should be about 1 grass seed per square centimeter, but it is always a good idea to sow a little extra because there are always some seeds that do not turn into anything. If you want the seeds evenly distributed, you can rent a seed drill.

After sowing the seeds, tear the soil again and finally drum it. The drum makes the soil firmer, which is an advantage when you have to mow the grass for the first time.

It takes about two to three weeks before the grass sprouts. You should first mow the grass for the first time when it is 8 cm high. There you should not cut it further down than 4-5 cm. Then you can gradually lower the cutting height as the grass gets a better grip.

Use grass reinforcement for paths, driveways, parking lots and the like
If you do not want to sow grass on a lawn, but on a path, driveway or car park, it is a good idea to have grass laid.
reinforcement. It is a type of brick with holes in it, which you can get in either plastic or concrete. You sow the grass in the holes where its roots are protected from those who walk or run across the reinforcement.

At the same time, grass reinforcement is extremely good at diverting water. Parking spaces with grass reinforcement therefore do not need to be sewered. In addition, cars naturally slow down when entering this type of parking space. Because grass reinforcement is so good at diverting water, it is important that you use some grass seeds that are drought tolerant.

When you need to lay grass reinforcement, no matter if it is plastic or concrete, you start by digging out. There should be a layer of pebbles or pearl gravel at the bottom. How thick the layer should be depends on how heavy vehicles are to drive on it. 25 cm is enough for ordinary cars. Then lay a non-woven fabric, a layer of reinforcement gravel and finally the reinforcement blocks. Once the blocks are laid, fill the holes with soil and grass seeds.
Think about what you want the lawn for
Before sowing grass seed on the prepared area, you should be clear about the purpose for which the lawn will be used and what you expect from it. The lawn at the luxury residence will certainly be different from the green carpet at the family house where the family lives with the children.

What care does the lawn need in the spring

Some would like to play ball games on their own plot, others want to have fun by the pool and others keep rabbits for which they need feeding. So choose grass mixtures according to the purpose for which your lawn will mainly serve.

Shop with confidence
Buy ready-made grass mixtures from a reputable manufacturer, not market-weighed seeds in bags without a species designation – instead of a low lawn for recreation, you could have a fodder meadow mixture in the garden. You can also have the seed mixed directly at the companies that deal with the establishment of lawns.

The lawn also needs to be winterized!
The lawn also needs to be winterized!
Thoroughly prepare the terrain
Prepare the land carefully before sowing the lawn, especially for new constructions, the amount of material remains from the construction under the soil layer. If you are sure that the area is in order, get rid of weeds (especially perennials – feathers, dandelions), cultivate to a depth of ten to fifteen centimeters and let the ground settle.

Level the land with rakes and level the surface with a batten. In the evening before sowing, sprinkle the whole area and throw a starter fertilizer on it, this will supply the necessary nutrients for the first period of grass growth.

Follow the sowing rules
Do not buy grass seed in stock, germination decreases by up to half after two years. How much seed will you need? It usually counts as 15-20 g / m2, denser sowing up to 30 g / m2, which means that for an area of one hundred square meters you will need about two to three kilograms of grass mixture.

Give the seeds the best conditions
Sow the seed regularly by spreading as regularly as possible, a seed drill is more suitable for large areas – sowing is more even and seed consumption is not unnecessarily high. After sowing, lightly feed the seeds into the soil with rakes, then harden the surface.

This is followed by a topping, soft and hearty. Better than a watering can or hose is a sprayer that does not wash out the seeds. It is important to keep the soil moist during the first month when the individual types of grass are emerging. Once the seed dries, it will not germinate and you will have a lawn with empty spaces.

Are you interested in a flowery meadow?
Maybe you don’t like the beautiful, but monotonous greenery of the maintained lawn – then you are the right adept at the garden or park meadow. You do not have to have hectares of land, you can create such a meadow at a village or holiday cottage or at a family house.

If you have a hectare, you can choose, for example, a butterfly meadow: it will provide a refuge for ever-declining butterflies and other insect species that are disappearing from nature. The meadow is easy to maintain, it is mowed only once a year.

You can start the lawn in several ways, sowing is just one option. It is a cheap method, but it has the disadvantage that in the first year you have to be careful with the grass seed and not use the lawn too much. Before you buy grass seed, find out if the grass mixture is suitable for the conditions of your garden and if it will be able to grow there. Then, of course, it is necessary to think about what purposes the grass will serve and select it accordingly. If you have already thought about these things and bought the seed, you can start sowing. How, when and in what amount of grass seed to sow?

1
when?

Sow the grass mixture in warm and humid conditions where it will quickly pick up and germinate. The ideal is the beginning of autumn, when the soil is still warm. You can sow the seed in the spring, but because the soil is still cold, the grass may not grow as well. Do not sow in summer as the seeds may dry out or die.

2
in what amount?

For each grass species or grass mixture, there are certain recommended doses at which the seeds should be sown. But the amount varies. Also count on a certain amount of seeds that you will lose due to birds, which often pick the seeds from the soil. Of course, you can create various scarecrows for birds, but even so, it is better to count on a possible loss so that your lawn really turns green. If you sow too little, you give room to the weeds to grow among the grass seed. If you sow too much, too humid conditions can form again. Therefore, find out how much you should use the grass mixture you have chosen. Then multiply the recommended dose of seeds by the size of the area you want to sow.

3
how?

You can sieve manually or with a seed drill. The seed drill is very practical, because you can sow in regular doses over the entire area without unnecessary effort. But if you don’t have it, don’t despair. We will advise you on a strategy for regularly sowing grass seed and hands. Divide the area you want to sow into regular squares and mark them with pins and strings. Count the number of seeds per piece (it is practical to choose m2). Within one piece, divide the area by halving the area and sowing the grass seeds evenly. In this way, sow all the pieces one by one. Finally, rake the area with rakes and water.

4
what about that?

As already mentioned, the area needs to be protected from birds with various nets or scarecrows. This is especially important from the beginning before the grass seed picks up. In dry weather, the lawn must be irrigated, because like any other plant, the grass needs enough moisture from the beginning.

5
how and when to mow?

Grass seed should grow within 14 days. Once the grass is at least 5 cm high, mow it to a height of about 2.5 cm. It is recommended to remove all the cut grass from the lawn, an ideal mower with a basket. Try to use the lawn as little as possible during the first year so that the grass absorbs well. ody
All flower meadows „give“ you time. You don’t have to mow them every week to look beautiful, you really only have to do them twice a season. The seed mix from Planta Naturalis contains thirty to sixty species of seeds for the establishment of such a meadow.

More than three quarters of them are seeds of meadow flowers, often those that are slowly declining in nature – viewfinder, plantain, koukol, linseed, marshmallow, oatmeal, buttercup, silice, earthworm and many other flowering meadow species. To date, there are over nine hundred! The rest of the seeds in the mixture are grass seeds.

You can also order the seeds according to your own requirements directly from the company that grows them. You can see what the different types of bows look like when you visit her. The establishment of such a meadow is governed by the same rules as the establishment of a normal lawn. Growth is a bit slower, individual plant species have different germination times, so the involvement of this stand takes the whole first year.

It is worth considering
The seeds of meadow mixtures are not suitable as a sowing in ordinary lawns or for mixing with grass seeds – common grasses are bred for more intensive growth and suppression of meadow plants. Flower meadows are not fertilized with nitrogen or other fertilizers, they are mowed for the first time at a height of more than twenty centimeters to a height of five centimeters. The seed is more expensive, but in the future you will save on fertilizer and petrol for the mower, because mowing with a scythe testifies to these meadows!

You have to take care of the lawn
Since you have put a lot of time and effort into establishing the lawn, do not regret investing in tools and aids for its future treatment.

Mowing – a high-quality mower with adjustable height, for larger gardens it is better to drive a motor mower, for small gardens an electric mower is enough. The sharpened blade must be a matter of course, otherwise you will have a yellow lawn after mowing with dried split ends of the grass.

Count on the time you have to spend maintaining the grass
Fertilization – for larger areas, get a rotary or slotted cart, for small areas, fertilizer can be thrown by hand, but only in good rubber gloves with a higher cuff.
Irrigation – surface sprinklers for morning or evening watering or automatic irrigation controlled by sensors monitoring the soil moisture.

Automatic irrigation is a good helper, which pays off especially for those who have their own water source
Aeration – scarifying rake for smaller lawns, for large areas an electric or gasoline scarifier is a must. Fertilizing an unaerated lawn is a waste of money, untreated lawn stuns, does not shoot and withers.
The grass school – so a lawn
Grass is a practical base for play, especially on larger surfaces. Even a smaller area lawn fulfills its function for recreation in a garden that otherwise consists of flower beds, shrubs and trees. No matter where you choose to sow your new lawn, autumn is a good time to sow grass seeds.

Although it is possible to sow grass for a large part of the year, it is best to do it in the autumn. Then the temperature in the soil is perfect and the humidity is high, which makes the seeds germinate more easily. Most grass mixtures germinate at 8 – 10 ° C, but there are varieties that can be sown already at 4 ° C. In the autumn, the grass seeds also get less competition from weeds, which helps the lawn on the stack.

Before sowing – sub-work is A and O
The sub-work is a must if you want to get a dense and even lawn for next season. Start by raking away any roots, twigs, stones and weeds from the surface. These are neither good for the lawn nor particularly pleasant for those who are going to stay on it.

Work the soil to give the grass seeds a foothold and to give the roots space. It is also good if you make sure that the soil is well drained and nutritious. Mix in gravel if the soil is muddy, improve the soil if the soil is lean and preferably basic fertilizer with, for example, grass fertilizer or another type of fertilizer.

Finish by leveling the surface thoroughly before spreading grass seeds – once the lawn has grown, it is easy to stumble into invisible holes.

Be sure to spread the grass seeds as evenly as possible when sowing grass.
Make sure to spread the grass seeds as evenly as possible for an even and fine lawn.

So grass – spread out, mulch and water
When the soil is ready, sprinkle grass seeds with a saw cart or by hand. A good idea is to sow on a windless day – grass seeds are light and fly easily in the winter.

An easy way to get a more even sowing over the whole area is to divide the lawn into smaller parts and then each part separately. The packaging states how large an area the mixture is intended to suffice for. Sow half of the seeds in the longitudinal direction of the lawn and half in the transverse direction.

Feel free to soak the seeds in the soil with a rake so that they make contact with the soil. Then water thoroughly. When you think you have finished watering, you can water a little more.

Grass seeds germinate after 2–4 weeks. It is important that the surface is kept moist until the grass has grown. Keep in mind that when the first straws come up, there are other species that take longer. Have some ice in your stomach and do not stop watering too early if it is dry outside.

Water a little and often in the beginning. Autumn is a good time to sow grass to retain the moisture you add. The rain is usually not enough to keep an even humidity.
Water a little and often in the beginning. Autumn is a good time to sow grass to retain the moisture you add. The rain is usually not enough to keep an even humidity.

Water the lawn – trust and often in the beginning, much and rarely later
Water your newly sown lawn a little and often. When it has grown up, however, it is better to water abundantly and rarely so that the water will reach all the way down to the roots. Feel free to water in the evening. When the sun is on, the water has time to evaporate before it penetrates to the roots.

Mow the lawn
Mow the newly sown lawn for the first time when the height is 7 – 8 centimeters. Then it is important not to cut too much but just top the straws so that they are split. In this way, the lawn becomes denser.

Be careful never to mow more than one-third of the length of the grass. For an established residential lawn, a height of 4 – 5 centimeters is a good benchmark when it comes to mowing. It is a good height for the grass to withstand drought and wear.

Do not be too eager to mow the lawn at first as it is still sensitive.
Do not be too eager to mow the lawn at first as it is still sensitive. The more regularly you mow once the carpet is established, the finer it grows.

Fertilize the lawn
In addition to the basic fertilizer when you sow your lawn, it is good to add nutrients regularly. At least three times per season is a good benchmark for a prosperous lawn. Fertilize for the first time when the grass starts to turn green and then twice more at intervals of about 6 – 7 weeks.

How you handle your lawn mower also matters how much you need to fertilize. Feel free to leave the grass clippings so that parts of the nutrients are returned to the lawn. If you rake up the grass to use as mulch and nutrients in your crops, you will take nutrients from the lawn. Then you need to replenish with new nutrients from outside (fertilizer).

Use the lawn
Depending on which grass seed you have chosen and the climate, you will usually be able to use your new lawn after about eight weeks. However, it takes a while before the lawn can withstand all too tough activities.
The lawn is a fantastic rug where both children and not-so-children can lie down and enjoy the sun, the fresh wind and of course also our loved ones, regardless of whether they have two legs or four legs. Yes, really: dogs and cats can also have a great time in it, either resting or playing.

So you may be wondering when and how to plant grass in the garden. And you would do well because if you saw it in the winter, for example, you would risk destroying many seeds. So we will resolve your doubts.

When to plant grass seeds?
Well, first it is important to know that the grass is grass (sometimes a single type or species, sometimes a mixture of them) and that these usually want heat and some humidity. Therefore, the perfect time to sow it is in the spring. When will it depend a lot on the climate in each area.

For example, in my area (south of Mallorca), because it is not really cold (there are only weak and occasional frosts in February, down to -1.5 ° C), and in March / April we already have a maximum of 20 ° C and a minimum exceeding 10 ° C for many days, the sowing of the lawn can be done without problems in early spring, even earlier (end of February).

If you live in a tropical area, with more or less stable minimum and maximum temperatures, then you can sow it at any time. I’m just going to tell you that if there is a time when it’s warmer and it rains less, wait until it’s clear before you plant the grass.

How long does it take for grass seeds to germinate?
Again, this time it depends on the species itself as well as the viability of the seed. But to give you an idea, 10-15 days after sowing you need to see how they germinate. It will be when the brown color of the earth begins to mix with the green of the tender grass.

It can be nice, but it can also make us believe that we have already done everything and that the grass will grow strongly from now on. And it will, but only if we consider it, avoid stepping on the area until the grass has grown at least ten centimeters. Do not worry: in a few weeks it will reach that height.

Why wait now? This is because herb seeds are very small, one centimeter or less. An adult weighs an average of 60-70 kg, and when we step on the ground just below our feet, it „sinks“ more or less depending on how loose it is, but enough for a seed to be buried deeper than it is. .

The lawn needs light to be able to germinate, so much so that it is normal to sow it and leave it as it is. But if the dogs and / or cats before it grows through the area, or if we are the ones walking through the land, these seeds will get lost. Even if the animals relieve themselves, the plants will be burned to death. For this reason, it is important that the area is temporarily vaulted if there are children and / or animals.

How to plant grass seeds?
If you dare to plant or sow grass, we recommend that you follow this step by step:

The first is to prepare the ground: you need to remove the stones and grass, as well as remove the soil with a tractor (or a hoe, if the area is small).
Afterwards you have to smooth it out with a rake. It is not necessary that it is perfect, but it is recommended that there are no „lumps“.
Install a drip irrigation system. It is important that the lawn is healthy.
For a few days, water the soil so that the remaining weed seeds germinate. Once they have done so, remove them either by bringing rototilles again or with a herbicide (we recommend rototillers or notches, as it is less harmful to the environment).
If you see that the land is flooded, spread a layer of quartz sand (or perlite, if it is not very wide, which you can buy here) and mix it with a hoe. Pudding can rot your lawn.
Now add a layer of about four inches of mulch (for sale here) over and level the ground again. This way you get the seeds to germinate well and get the nutrients they need from day one.
Afterwards, you need to sow seeds from the lawn. An easy way to do this is to take a handful and spread them around the ground and make sure there are no piles left. Then all that remains is to pass a roll to make it more uniform.
And finally, water.
Enjoy your lawn! Now you need to take care of it and you can do it by following these tips.
Fall is usually the accepted time to plant grass seeds so that you get a lush green grass when the weather warms up. April is the next best time. Sowing in the spring must take place early so that the grass has the opportunity to be established before summer heat sets but cannot take place so early that the seeds will rot in the frozen and wet soil and prevent weeds from over-hardening the seed. Digging a lawn is cheaper than laying soot and works especially well for repairing thin stains on existing lawns.

Remove dead vegetation, sticks and large stones from the planting area. Use a power rake to remove thick vegetative layers.

To the ground with a rototiller to a 4-inch depth. Work in compost when laying if the soil quality is poor or has too high a clay content to loosen it and improve it.

Apply 1.5 pounds per 1,000 square feet of starting fertilizer. Apply fertilizer before planting.

Set the drip spreader or manure spreader to half of the recommended setting on the seed bag, as you will make two passes over each area. Make sure it is in the closed position and fill it half full with grass seeds.

Move the spreader to the starting position on the lawn and open the spreader. Slide it in horizontal rows at a steady pace. When you are done, sow the lawn once but in vertical rows to ensure that the entire lawn is well covered. Top up the spreader as needed.

Lay an ¼ inch layer of peat moss or other organic mulch over the entire lawn.

Use a lawn on the entire seed, working in horizontal rows and minimizing overlap as you roll it. This ensures that all seeds come into contact with the soil and speeds up the spread.

Place a 2-inch layer of skim milk over the seed. Mulching preserves soil moisture, helps prevent weeds and keeps the soil from refreezing.

Water two to three times daily when the ground temperature is above 55 degrees F. Keep the soil surface moist at all times but avoid causing puddles. Often, light watering for 10 minutes is all that is required.

Remove the straw when the grass shoots appear. Water longer, 30-minute intervals once a day.

When to plant or sow the lawn?
The best times to plant or sow grass with seeds in Spain are Spring and early Autumn. Both are times that we can call “growth”, that is, everything grows after having overcome the extreme times; winter or summer. In these extreme times it is not advisable to plant or sow grass.

At the beginning of Autumn (in Spain), the grass comes out faster because the ground is hot from the end of the summer, and it covers a lot after two weeks. In spring, the grass takes a little longer to cover the area, about three to four weeks.

Logically, the best time to sow grass with seeds depends on the climate of each area.

In continental climates, the ideal planting runs from mid-March to the end of May. In autumn, we will preferably sow between the end of August and mid-October.

In oceanic climates, sowing periods are longer both in spring and autumn, as these are mild and humid climates.

In the warm climates of the Mediterranean and southern regions, spring sowing can be anticipated in early March, and even late February, lasting until mid-May. In autumn, you should not start sowing until early September, extending the sowing season until early – mid-November.

The warm climate tussock species (Cynodon dactylon, Pennisetum clandestinum, Paspalum vaginatum, etc.) require night temperatures of about 13ºC for their germination, and daytime temperatures of about 17 / 18ºC. Therefore they must be sown well into spring or early summer. There is no room for autumn planting for these lawns.

For temperate climate species, autumn plantings are always preferable, since we are moving towards cooler temperatures and a more humid weather, conditions that are generally appreciated by tussock grasses. In addition, in autumn, the incidence of weeds is much lower than in spring.

However, gardening is also linked to the law of supply and demand. It is in spring when private owners and municipal technicians get down to work to prepare the parks and gardens for their moment of greatest use and enjoyment. For this reason, most of the annual plantings are concentrated in spring.

Preparing the ground for sowing grass
To ensure a good implantation of the lawn it is very important that the soil is in good condition. It must have a good structure, that is, the ability to retain water without weighing it down, and a sandy texture that guarantees good drainage.

For it:

Do a deep tillage with a hoe or motor hoe digging about 15-20 centimeters into the ground. This way you can remove and remove stones, root debris and other thick elements, as well as pre-existing vegetation. If you wet the ground it will be easier for you. Rake to remove the smallest debris and then leave it perfectly smooth.
If you are renovating your old lawn and cannot till it because it would break the irrigation system, then tear off the old lawn in a layer of about 6 cm. manually or by renting an appropriate machine if you find it in your area.
Eliminate unwanted weeds with a „False seeding.“ To prevent plants from growing in the grass in the future, water the land for several days so that the seeds that are in the ground will germinate. When they have germinated you can repeat the tillage and rake well. Another alternative is to apply a total non-residual herbicide (total herbicide) and repeat the operation about 15 days later.
I made sure Make sure the ground drains well. Waterlogging can lead to grass root rot, fungal disease, or moss spots. Ensuring good drainage is therefore essential. It will be necessary to smooth the surface to eliminate any concavity and, likewise, provide a slight unevenness towards a natural or artificial drain if possible. Spreading a layer of sand will ensure optimal drainage; To establish its thickness, take into account the nature of the terrain. If it is clay, the most effective is to mix the earth with sand. If there are still areas with excess water, it will be necessary to install a drainage network.
Bury the irrigation system. Buried sprinkler pipes and parts should be installed at this time. Make sure the irrigation system design is well thought out and water the entire area evenly.
Add mulch or topsoil. The lawn needs a mantle of topsoil at least 10 centimeters thick to grow strong and shiny. You can add this layer or enrich the soil that you already have well composted organic compost or mulch that will provide it with slow release nutrients, which will favor microbial activity and improve the structure.
Level the surface. The last steps before sowing are to level the surface with a rake so that it is perfectly even, and pass a roller or garden roller to smooth it.
We have a video advice where we talk more in depth about the types of soils and how to improve them ➜ How to know what types of soils we have in the garden

What kind of grass to plant?
There are many varieties of grass, since the grass itself is a mixture of several types of grass seeds. Depending on the type of seeds and the percentage of them among themselves, we will obtain one type of grass or another. We cannot say that one type of lawn is better than another, but that one type of lawn will adapt better than another to our garden, that is, to the particular conditions of our garden or the area in which we live. Climatic conditions, characteristics of the soil and irrigation water, insolation, proximity to the sea, care that it will receive and use that it will be given.

I recommend that you pay attention to the type of grass you are going to sow, asking professionals in your area or the nearest Garden Center because they have the experience, or consulting this video advice ➜ What types of grass seeds to sow in Spain, where we talk about it. If your garden has special conditions to take into account, such as shady areas, do not let them overlook them.

Once you have chosen the type of grass, it is important that you take good note, not only of the commercial brand, but of its composition. Write it down and save this information so that in the future, if you have to reseed again, you can do it with the same type of grass or with the most suitable grass to regenerate damaged areas. Believe me, if you plant or sow grass with different types of grass, you can tell the difference, and after the years you have an unpresentable hodgepodge.

Step by step for sowing the lawn.
1- First attention to drainage. Check if the land has drainage problems, that is, if after heavy rains the water remains stagnant in puddles for a long time. If this is the case, you should take care of solving this problem before doing anything, if you don’t do it like this, then everything will be problems, the grass will not grow well and it will develop problems due to fungi. If you do not see special drainage problems in your garden, you do not need to do anything because the installation of drainage systems is very expensive and you must assume them only when you have no other choice.

2- The irrigation system and the quality of its design and installation is very important, if you want to sow a new lawn from scratch make sure you install a good, well-designed automatic irrigation system, and if you are going to renew your lawn or do a reseeding of damaged areas, thoroughly review the irrigation system to improve it or adjust it where necessary before continuing. Most of the problems that I encounter every day on lawns are caused by a poorly designed irrigation system that does not water the area homogeneously, with areas that are very wet and others that are half dry.

3- If you are going to start from scratch, or you are going to renew your lawn, do a false sowing, which means that you must water the land for a few weeks as if it were already sown (although in reality you have not sown anything yet), this way you will get them to germinate almost all the weed seeds you have in the field and then apply a total herbicide to eliminate them.  качествени торове минерални
